Description
Tulipwood (American Tulip or Yellow Poplar) is a clean, light-coloured hardwood with a fine, even grain and subtle greenish-grey streaking through a pale cream to yellow background – occasionally with purple-brown heartwood patches that contrast beautifully. Despite being classed as a hardwood it’s light and easy to work, machines cleanly, and takes paint and stain exceptionally well.
Popular as an affordable, stable timber for furniture interiors, painted cabinetry, shelving, jigs and patterns, and as a secondary wood in cabinet-making. The smooth, consistent surface makes it one of the best choices for painted finishes – it barely needs grain filling. Less characterful than oak or ash in a natural finish, but pairs well with both as a contrast secondary timber. Food safe when finished. Durability – internal use only.
